Even though winters on the Island aren’t brutal most of the time, that one cold snap is always enough to cause trouble. A couple of years ago, a pipe in our crawl space froze just enough to stop water flow, and it freaked me out. Since then I’ve been extra cautious whenever temperatures drop. I’m curious what simple steps people actually take around here to keep pipes from freezing, especially in older homes or places that don’t get much heat.

What’s worked for us is focusing on the basics and not overthinking it. Insulating exposed pipes made a bigger difference than I expected, especially in the garage and under the house. We also leave a tap dripping slightly during the coldest nights and keep cabinet doors open where plumbing runs along outside walls. I found some good local advice by checking Plumbers in Campbell River, BC before winter, just to see what services they recommend for prep. A little effort upfront saved us from panic later.

Living near the coast teaches you to expect sudden changes in weather more than extreme ones. Homes that are comfortable most of the year still need attention in spots you don’t see every day. Small habits, like checking spaces you normally ignore, tend to prevent bigger headaches. It’s usually the unnoticed areas that end up causing the most stress when conditions shift unexpectedly.
